We have loads of ad hoc discussions about balancing clients, prospects, family, health, charity work, learning etc. What tools do we use? How do we prioritise? How do we manage the calendar? How do we stay sane?

So this week’s Let’s Talk (on Tuesday) is dedicated to the subject of creating balance:

    • I know this was a point of discussion with Ben’s group on the last module discussion so may be of interest to our latest graduates to join in – Sophie Mitchell-Heggs Anastasia Trifonoff Deepshikha Yadav @peter-fayle Yasmin Gregory Fay Edwards Roger Holdom Sehr Tejpar Lorenzo Espinosa Emily Anderson

    • I know you’re experienced with balancing Alex Pitt, Zarir 'Zed' Vakil, Richard Saldanha, Linh, Lisa Solomon – would love to hear your thoughts. And it would be great to have Angie Bishop Hema Patel emma reynolds Regina Dundelova Luke Rodwell Eike Post Silvia Janska Damien Lucy Warman Ginnie Dallard with us too!

      • Ha – this couldn’t have come at a more perfect time!

My family, work, life balance hangs precariously on a giant 3D pendulum. Every time I start to see a pattern that might be ‘manageable’, a pattern disrupter arrives (sometimes for the positive!) and it’s all erratic again!

I’m going to sign up BUT will be juggling children & after school clubs…….

    • Some notes from the call:

      Top ”time sinkholes”:

      – Work dithering

      – Working for free

      – Non-work downtime (social media etc)

What do we want to more of?

      – Personal branding & thought leadership

      – Networking & pitching for new business

      – Serving clients

Vic talked about the need to focus on commercial tasks without any distractions – sometimes even down to turning off the internet!

Zed talked about personal rewards – changing lunch from functional to a reward for example.

Ben loves to use colour coding on his calendar with a balance between each area of his time.

Deepshikha added that chunking tasks can also be done based on the emotional/mental state required to get that work accomplished – an idea I love!

We all talked about reconnecting with ourselves in the day – via walks or other forms of exercise, calls away from the screen etc.

Tracey brought up how to avoid working for free, or getting the most from a company even when they can’t pay you directly, which Ben dived into with the answer of balance of those who can’t pay you and looking for those who are already further along in their company formation – so you consult from the word go.

On doing more of the ”good stuff” we talked about using sharing with thoughtful insights rather than the time and effort of longer articles. Keeping the thought leadership connected to your personal brand and portfolio career, to help tell their stories.

Zed suggested Resume Worded for helping you improve and tailor your LinkedIn profile/CV etc.
