The global pandemic caused a surge in the number of people leaving their full-time roles. It put things into perspective and gave people the opportunity to mentally check-in and reflect on what they want out of their career.
It’s no surprise that millions of people are looking at alternative career options with greater flexibility, autonomy and freedom. People are placing more focus on their time, productivity, health, family, and overall happiness.

This is a pivotal time for a great any people. Opportunities abound, technology makes it possible to work anywhere and for anyone. The way companies have treated their employees leading up to and during the ”pandemic” has made people think clearly for the first time about what they want out of life. Many have spent as much as 11 hours a day on video calls and work longer hours than before, as they are accessible. Bosses have not done anything to restrict this, but have actually been part f the problem and preyed on the uncertainty.
Time with family, sharing responsibilities, seeing your partner ( many are like ships in the night due to job commitments) playing with your children, has all gone into a melting pot. Over the next 2 to 3 years I believe we will see a shift from traditional roles and ways of working to something very new ( to be defined). At the moment (August 2021) there is the largest amount of vacancies for decades, but employers are finding them difficult to fill and are relying on interims and freelancers. This trend is only going to normalise and grow.
Think Life-Work Balance, Not Work-Life Balance !

Interesting points Damien. I think the large majority of people would agree with working more than before. No commutes, and being able to work from home has definitely contributed to this and I think you’re probably right that bosses have preyed on the uncertainty of the pandemic. Life-work balance is I hope, the way forward

Great article! The other perspective that is huge driving force in this change is the response of the company as an employer – the Financial Services space has demonstrated a polar response. JP Morgan and Goldman’s pushing for aggressive quick, full time office return VS Citi and the European banks generally moving to more flexible employee centered policy. The way in which companies not only respond to the immediate return but also plan for the future of work – could be a driving factor in a further increase to employee resignation. Company policy on work flexibility will become a significant differentiator in a candidate led market. This will become even more interesting in the FS space as they attempt to further collaborate or mimic FinTechs. Even more interesting when you consider this is the first time we’ve really seen 5 generations alongside each other in the workforce. Interesting times ahead, and continued significant evolution to be expected!

Completely agree with you re: polar responses to returning to the offices. I’ve seen lots of debates on LinkedIn recently about whether flexible working should be considered a job role perk and I think companies that try and sell it as a perk (that leads to reduced pay!) are going to end up with an increase in resignation and high employee turn around.

“The Great Resignation” that is a hilarious pun guys!
For a long time the majority have long known one way of working with other possibilities but not knowing how to impliment them when it’s not their business and they can’t make or have a say in those decisions. Along comes the Pandemic and forces business and people to look at working in a different way in order to keep functioning. Most found working from home. Some found being made redundant forced them into that little dream of running their own business. Unfortunately for some it also brought new pressure and stress that they probably didnt sign up for initially. Some may even have realised they need to diversify in order to survive the worse case senario, which they probably think they would ever have to prepare for.
All this and more contribute to change in the way people look at the workplace.
I might have gone slightly off topic here but I believe this a great topic as we’ve all seen what has happened in the world we live in.
