From entity models to IR35 and deciding on whether to set up as a limited company vs. as a sole trader – there’s a lot to think about when you first launch a portfolio career 💡

How did you find the process of setting up your own business?

      • I’m joining for the first 30 minutes, but definitely curious to hear about people with multiple companies or whether people are choosing to separate their different projects financially etc. I run my homeware brand By Shax as a company, but I’ve very recently started freelancing and still a bit puzzled about whether to merge everything into the company and make it an umbrella company (as recommended by any accountant) or keep the two separated. Leaning towards combining everything under one company and just expanding its scope, but excited to hear everyone’s stories.

    • Can’t make it tomorrow, unfortunately. Mine was hard work as I had to set up a limited company and be VAT registered all within a 2 week window during which HSBC managed to screw up setting up my bank account! Under normal circumstances, it’s relatively easy to set up for a single person but IR35 is now an issue. Haven’t done a founders agreement but would have thought that needed some professional advice to make sure it’s right.

    • Sorry I can’t join the session because of a conflict. I got my CPA/Chartered Accountant to do it, who is also a Lawyer … useful! IRS was very slow but no surprises there.
