    Hi all!

I’m brand-new to the group and have a question for those of you who have traveled while working remotely. I’ll be working from Europe for a few months and, while not concerned about the larger cities, I’m trying to find a tool for strong, reliable wi-fi I can access from anywhere. I specialize in Internal Communications and so much of my role is video calls. I’d love any recommendations or ideas!

    Thanks,

    Laura

    • Hi Laura, welcome to the community! We’ve definitely got some fellow digital nomads and people who work flexibly in our community, so we’ll tag those who may be able to offer some advice – Davide Gallo, Hannah D'Souza, Alexandre Liaume, Anthony Donataccio, Umesh Dhanji, George Hunter 🙌

    • I’m UK based but I worked remotely around Portugal over the years. Generally most broadband to homes in towns is good enough now to work but always check that if you’re planning to go somewhere really remote.

It’s possible to hire a portable Wifi network (usually 4G) like ’Hippocket’ that covers Europe or you can buy a European e-SIM card for your phone. If you’re not moving between countries a lot, it might be better to buy a SIM card in that country for the month which will probably be cheaper. It depends on your data usage per day and how you work.

    • Hi Laura Gaston! I’d love to grab an e-coffee! I don’t define myself a full-fledged digital nomad yet, but I have been working from small & large cities in Portugal, Italy, France & Morocco (either for choice or serendipity… that’s a story for another time 🤣). There have definitely been some learnings: always (always!) have portable 5G hotspot, invest in some good noise cancelling headphones & mic, grab a good laptop-ready power bank. Let’s have a chat 🙂

    • I have a GigSky (https://www.gigsky.com/) SIM in my phone (I always buy dual SIM phones but I think they do an eSIM package now too).

This allows me to buy voice and data for which ever country I’m visiting for as long as I want – very useful in post Brexit days when you might get roaming fees.

Whether it gives you the bandwidth you need is another question.

      • Thank you, Allan! Yes, the bandwidth is definitely my main concern. We have an All Hands towards the end of June and I’m usually the one responsible for the broadcast.
