I have a question for the lawyers of the community I hope someone can shed a bit of light on…
When creating online, paid content (specifically an online course) what are the rules around using other brands images?
For context, we’re wrapping up an online course teaching new businesses how to brand themselves, and we use a lot of examples of how other brands do it, the likes of McDonalds, Innocent Smoothies etc.
We’ve pulled together images to illustrate the teaching, but unsure around permissions and whether showing other brands logos and product images would be a no-no without written consent.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hey Alex Pitt – I have actually had a few of these convos with IP lawyers. The general consensus seems to be that logos can be used in a non commercial manner – e.g. educational purposes and it is not defamatory. Also it is always good to add a disclaimer, saying that the trademark you have used does not belong to you.
