*Monday reminder for all Catapult graduates!*

Join us for your catch-up call this afternoon. Never been before? We’re now seven cohorts strong! This makes the catch-up an excellent opportunity for networking as well as bringing your thoughts, ideas and challenges to the table.
You don’t need to come with questions or thoughts prepared for these sessions. Previously we’ve found that hearing others talk through their plans can often spark an idea for your own portfolio career, and it’s always nice to see what others have been up to. This session is also a great place to set accountability for your goals.
Looking forward to seeing you at 4pm UK time!
The reminder email will go out with the link an hour before but let Claire Moss know if you have any problems joining.

Thank you everyone who attended our Fireside Event today discussing how AI will affect the future of working. Also a massive thank you to our panelists Genna Barnett, Jenny Collins and @jesus it was so interesting to hear your perspectives.
There were lots of great discussions about the future of AI, the automatization of the labour industry, and the effectiveness of AI in recruitment. I particularly found the discussion around AI not being able to replicate the personalised nature of recruitment and serendipity really interesting.
Did anyone have anything else they would like to add to our discussion today? We would love to know more about what you think!

Really interesting stuff! I was curious about where the line is drawn between AI and the people-led systems. In all honesty I found it quite comforting to hear the many ways that a human approach can’t be beaten. (maybe thats the sci-fi fan in me talking…)
-
Alex Pitt I was exactly the same! I think it’s easy to assume that the human approach will eventually be redundant so it’s good to hear that that is not necessarily the case!

Really enjoyed the discussion. At the very end, someone mentioned trust in software. While software has become critical to virtually all aspects of modern life, processes for determining whether we can trust it are conspicuously absent. A colleague and I wrote a paper ’Towards Trustable Software’ for the Institute for Strategy, Resilience and Security at UCL looking at this. The key principles and the report can be found at https://www.trustablesoftware.com/

Thanks Pete, I’ll definitely have a read. I completely agree that I don’t think all software can be trusted! Especially after watching documentaries like ’The Social Dilemma’.

Really good, balanced discussion today. Thank you to all who attended. For the avoidance of doubt, I am very much an ML/automation/(soft) AI fan. It’s just the claims that are made by many about AI are often completely overblown. Somewhat dated but still relevant methinks: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/towards-artificial-general-intelligence-richard-saldanha/

Thank you for attending Richard. I think that’s so true- for me it’s the unknown that makes me slightly more cautious. I think educating people about AI will be really important to make individuals less wary/unsure.

It was interesting hearing reflections about how AI can help from a business perspective, the comparative value of human interaction, and of the risks of us moving too far towards the former and away from the latter. I also also think there’s huge potential for AI to help us in quite a human-focused way – for example charities using chatbots to help people access the support they need more quickly (thus freeing up staff time to provide that vital support), or AI-based coaches that su…

Med-Tech companies are developing it to give basic mental health support. Useful where there aren’t the human resources available.
