Happy New Year All!!
I wonder if anyone here has any insight or able to direct regarding self-employed vs employed taxation/benefits? I am set up as a self employed (sole trader) consultant but work a lot with one particular startup and i have an opportunity to be employed (part time) or continue as self employed/hour rate or retainer. I dont know whats best when it comes to IR35 and best taxation status. Anyone has any tips please?
Thank you!

Hi Silvia Janska. Everyone’s circumstances are different, but – so far – I have never seen a situation for a portfolio professional that was more tax efficient to be an employee, other than in the early days of having a lightweight side hustle (generating little income so – in effect – being tax free) alongside your day job.
If things are picking up I would also suggest considering setting up a limited consulting company – you seem to be able to legally expense more things against a company than as a sole trader, reducing your taxes further, plus you get some liability benefits.

Silvia Janska I always find this an interesting one because for me it is broader than just the tax it is also the liability issues and the benefits that accrue in both cases.
My portfolio is a mix of employed, contracting through an umbrella company and contracting through a personal service company. This combination allows me to be compliant where I am an officer of the company ( for tax an employee), gain benefits such as furlough where needed and limit my legal exposure without the need for high PI cover where needed. Happy to have a chat if you want to DM.
