Do yourselves a favour and read this brilliant piece of commentary by England boss Gareth Southgate.
This is a heartfelt message to any football fan about what it means to play for your country and why it matters.
The piece goes well beyond football.
It’s also a fascinating insight into what makes Southgate the great people manager and motivator that he clearly is.
Win or lose in the upcoming European Championships Southgate has elevated himself to truly extraordinary levels with his clear appreciation of wider themes at this time.
Bravo, Gareth. A giant at a time when lesser mortals roam the land.

Thanks for sharing here Stephen. I saw this on social media shared by non other than Sir Kier Starmer. Great message by Gareth and good to see that TPC have flown the Pride flag this week. Racism has no place in modern life let alone football, and if taking the knee (pointedly) in front of a bunch of racist idiots keeps shining a light on the subject that is a good thing. Its a free country so they can keep booing but England football and its people should keep showing in every way that inherently its people are multi ethnic, diverse and inclusive. Good luck England in the tournament.
Despite having little to no knowledge on anything football related, I found this article a really interesting read. It’s great to hear him address some bigger issues we have in society, and also his perspective on life in general. A very interesting read. Thank you for sharing!
