Is the Catapult course still free, or has the membership fee been (re)instated, as it indicates in the course description?

And it’s worth noting this is a one-off fee, so our membership to the community continues freely. Knowing how much you got from it, if there’s anyone in mind who would like to join, please do feel free to send them our/my way if they’ve got any questions

I know there are a number of UX/graphics designers in the herd. What do you think about the new(ish) Google professional certification in UX design? This would likely be for my own interest and curiosity, unless I can find a company in Berlin that is aching to hire a 63 year old junior designer. https://www.coursera.org/professional-certificates/google-ux-design

Excellent question, Tim! Fiona Chorlton-Voong Mark Moss Selin Yigitbasi-Ducker Ayoub Bari, Anthony Main – any feelings on this new certification?

Ohhh this is new to me, thanks for the heads up Tim Walters, Ph.D. will check it out

It’s $39 per month for a course that, they say, you can/should finish in less than six months. But that’s at only 10 hours per week; treat it like a full time job and you could potentially finish it in six weeks at a cost of less than $80. I don’t know how it compares to CourseFoundry or General Assembly, but the former is €5600 and the latter is over $14,000.

I just asked someone I know, in the UK a contract UXer would expect between £400-500 for the most part. £450 pretty common for senior level. £500 not uncommon for senior-lead. More than that is rare but doable in financial services usually.

lol whoops that would have been useful information! I meant a contractors day rate

So interesting…bringing Jane O'Sullivan into the convo as she recently signed up to a UX course. I haven’t heard about the Google one. I did 2 UX courses, one through UAL which was circa £600 and the other through GA which was in the thousands. It definitely helped having my design knowledge going into that course.

Ah really cool, I haven’t heard of the Google one either. The one I’m doing is part of the ’The Interaction Design Foundation.’ https://www.interaction-design.org/. They have a range of affordable and certified courses that are highly rated, so it also may be of interest to you.

Hum, thought I replied to this. Thanks for the insights. I think I’ll start with one month of Google (first week free).

Good luck, let us know how it goes! Would be curious to hear your thoughts.

Does anyone know whether, and if so, how, it is possible to set up this kind of two column image + text format in Medium, or LinkedIn, or a normal WordPress editor? (If you have the time, the sample piece is smart and hilarious.) https://idlewords.com/talks/website_obesity.htm

Hi Tim! I’m not aware that you can in LinkedIn or Medium (although always happy to proven to be wrong!) but you definitely can in WordPress – here’s a bit more about columns for WP sites: https://www.wpbeginner.com/plugins/how-to-add-multi-column-content-in-wordpress-posts-no-html-required/

Good tip. Recent versions of WordPress make it quite simple thanks to Gutenberg (the new block editor). The guide Lexi Radcliffe-Hart shared is very didactic.

Who has experience with hiring someone to ”build” a website — i.e., to take the draft site I created in Squarespace and turn it into a functional site? (It doesn’t need to be Squarespace as long as the look and feel is similar.) It’s a single page, about six laptop screens long — i.e., it all fits on six PPT slides. What would the cost be?

Tim Walters, Ph.D. I would post it as a job on Upwork and would say a few £100 and someone could do that with what you’ve got. Maybe £500-600 for someone who’s going to go over and above
-
Hi Dhaval — Thanks for the offer. I’m not ready yet, but so you know, the draft site is currently a single scroll-down page. All of the content fits on five PPT slides. I might add a an sample work section (with white papers and videos) and/or a blog section as well.

I’ve never hidden the fact that I’m an American in our TPC exchanges. But now I can again be proud and happy about it! Four years ago, I became obsessed with this song, desperate to have back my (i.e., a) man (i.e., real president). Today it happened.

Happy for you, your country and the world. Also, big fan of Cindy’s hair in this clip as well as of the perfectly suited use of the glockenspiel!

Hey Tim! The Catapult Course has now moved out of its pilot phase so the membership fee is correct 🙂
